Beginning of June 2018

Just been up to the allotment and things are looking ‘quite’ good . Quite a few thinks have been planted and are looking OK , while somethings I am really struggling with . Last year and this i just cannot get beetroot to grow. I started early in the year and set some new seeds away – new because i bought new seeds in case it was last years that were a problem . Nothing . Started them off in the pollytunnel – unheated – nothing. Planted seed directly into the garden – so far nothing. I am trying the bolthardy beet , nothing complicated or exotic . will see how they grow (or not ) over the next few weeks.

strawberries are starting to turn red – had a few already , very tasty .

Success with Cauli and sprouts – i am using my old hen run for these –  keep the birds and butterflies at bay – dont worry though – i have kept an area at the top of the allotment for wildlife (some fellow allotmenteers say i am just to lazy to dig that – but no – it was planned). In there i have sown some wild flower seeds and we have various berry plants . Just leaving it all natural and see if i can get more berries than the birds.
I have first and second early spuds in the ground and also this year i have a few buckets that i am growing them in

Planted out the  dwarf beans , looking nice and strong. These were started in the polytunnel a short while ago

Onions and shallots looking good as well – netted to protect from the birds

In the polytunnel we have tomatoes in grow bags and buckets, as well as carrots , leeks and turnips – again all in buckets
